NAMMO SIGNS A NEW DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT FOR AMMUNITION FOR THE F35 LIGHTNING II

Nammo Raufoss AS and the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO) have signed a contract on the final development and qualification of 25 mm APEX ammunition and associated training ammunition adapted to the F35 Fighter.

The contract is worth up to NOK 66 million and Nammo will also be providing capital in the amount of NOK 22 million. The contract will be completed by the end of 2012.

Several decades’ experience in technology
Nammo has a long background in the development of aircraft ammunition. Over the last 40 years, both Norwegian and allied fighters have used aircraft ammunition manufactured at Raufoss.

The newly developed APEX ammunition is based on Nammo’s technological know-how, as well as several years’ experience in the development and manufacture of aircraft ammunition. As early as 2005, Nammo started developing APEX in collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment.

Must satisfy extremely high technical requirements
Technical requirements for aircraft ammunition have grown significantly in accordance with the operational challenges and APEX has been especially developed to meet such requirements.
When APEX has been completely developed, it will have a higher rating than any other aircraft ammunition on the market. It is quite unique that one and the same ammunition may be used against both air and ground targets, where competing types of ammunition have been developed to work in either one or the other target scenario.

Uranium-free ammunition
Nammo’s APEX ammunition also represents a more viable alternative for countries that continue to use aircraft ammunition that contains depleted uranium.

Training ammunition (TP-RRR) is based on Nammo’s patented Reduced Ricochet Risk (R3) technology. This technology provides enhanced safety in connection with firing exercises.

In the same way that aircraft ammunition developed in the 1970s has been adapted for use on other platforms and in various calibres, APEX ammunition can also be adapted for use on alternative platforms and in different calibres.

“The technology used in APEX ammunition has, in itself, significant industrial potential and is expected to make a substantial contribution to Nammo’s future product range. We are extremely satisfied with the collaboration with the Norwegian Armed Forces in respect of the development of APEX”, says Edgar Fossheim, President and CEO of the Nammo Group.
